AN ACT MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR HIGH SCHOOL REFORM.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
Section 1. APPROPRIATION.--Two million dollars ($2,000,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the state department of public education for expenditure in fiscal year 2002 to implement research-based high school reform efforts to create a more proactive and responsive high school system. To be eligible for funding, reform efforts must align high schools with elementary and middle schools, post-secondary institutions and work opportunities; build upon business-education partnerships; utilize professional development; promote continuous improvement; and engage youth in the reform process. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2002 shall revert to the general fund.
