A Visit to Sierra Vista Primary

A recent site visit by the Ruidoso Municipal School District Board of Education offered a firsthand look at the fun, engaging learning taking place each day at Sierra Vista Primary. From our youngest learners to our second-grade students, the visit highlighted the many ways SVP teachers and staff are creating opportunities for students to learn, explore, and grow.

The tour began with some of our littlest learners. SVP’s 3-year-old classes are nearly full, with just a few spaces remaining for families looking for a welcoming early-learning environment for their child. The 4-year-old program is currently at capacity. The early-learning wing, part of the newest construction at SVP, includes special “focus rooms” designed to support sensory activities, individualized instruction, and small-group learning when needed. Each classroom pod serving the 3-year-old, 4-year-old, and kindergarten programs has access to one of these flexible learning spaces.

Innovation was also on display in SVP’s computer and newly added STEM labs, which are now up and running thanks to grant funding. These spaces give students opportunities during their school week to interact with technology, experiment, problem-solve, and experience hands-on learning. Board members also got a glimpse of the fun happening in the gym with bean bag activities and visited a music class where second graders were actively learning and making music on xylophones.

Strong academics remain at the heart of the school day. Classrooms are implementing the 95 Percent Group phonics program, including within SVP’s bilingual classrooms, to strengthen foundational reading skills. During the visit, students could also be seen working on skills such as compound words and enunciation. Throughout Sierra Vista Primary, the Board’s visit showcased a school filled with active learning, creative experiences, and dedicated educators working to build a strong foundation for RMSD’s youngest students.
