Standards at a Glance - Kindergarten
The Nob Hill Early Childhood Center houses programs for three- and four-year-old children with developmental delays, Lincoln County Headstart, Parents-as-Teachers Program, the Regional Educational Cooperative IX Birth-to-Three Developmental Services, and full-day Kindergarten. The directors of each of these programs along with the principal of the kindergarten work closely to provide a seamless education for students ages birth through five.
Teachers, instructional assistants, and specialists work together to provide optimal educational opportunities. Speech and language pathologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, bilingual program staff, counselors, Native American liaison, a music teacher, and others work closely with the teaching staff to provide a well-rounded early childhood curriculum.
Students learn using developmentally appropriate materials and strategies, as the Center features thematic learning and active participation in hands-on activities. The Kindergarten is part of a K-3 Reading First Initiative, using Open Court to build a strong foundation for reading. Everyday Math has been adopted in grades K-5 and will be implemented in 2007-08. This program encourages teachers and students to explore mathematical ideas through a deeper understanding of key mathematical concepts and an in-depth study of all the strands of mathematics.
A fully funded and staffed Parent-as-Teachers program and Family Center provide resources, materials, training information, workshops, referrals, home visits, and opportunities to collaborate regarding each child's individual needs. This program serves families with children from birth through five years of age.
The Nob Hill Preschool Program (Headstart and the 3 & 4 year-old Developmentally Delayed Program) is the only public school in New Mexico to be accredited by the National Association for Education of Young Children (NAEYC), which represents high standards in all areas of early childhood programming. The school was selected as one of 14 in the nation to receive an Inviting School Award at the International Alliance for Invitation Education World 2000 Conference.
