Answer to RMS sports fans' dreams nears goal line

Heaven knows “port-a-potty” beats “behind-a-bush”, but fans at Ruidoso Middle School sports events have been longing for something better since the new RMS campus was completed in 2012. Relief may finally be at hand.

At its meeting last week, the Ruidoso school board was shown an architect’s model of a proper and permanent comfort station, the first draft of the structural plan that officials hope to see in real life on the RMS field as early as next summer in time for next year’s football season.

“It will go on the north end of the field next to the parking lot, so people will go past it as they go in and out,” said Lenny Allen, the school district’s director of maintenance. A ticket kiosk will sit nearby.

The field is currently served by three plastic sanitary booths, two of them regular size and the third somewhat larger to accommodate the disabled.

It’s not clear exactly who decided this would be a good place to save a buck when plans were being laid for Ruidoso’s otherwise exemplary middle school facilities. But the wisdom of that decision has been questioned frequently during board discussions over the past year.

The model finally showed up at the board’s Feb. 14 meeting and from the warm reception it was given you’d have thought it was a box of Valentine’s Day chocolates.

“We’ve been wanting to do something about this for a long time,” said departing board member Marc Beatty. “I’m glad I got to see it.”
